1943-2000
Sundar was born Soondarlal
Popo in 1943 in the small village of Princess Town, Trinidad. His
father, a musician, played the 'tassa' drum. He went to live with
his aunt, Rookmin Bahora, a member of a ladies cultural (East Indian)
singing group.
At a very early age Sundar Popo was
drawn into the world of entertainment. At eight, a neighbor, Noor
("Bedo") Mohammed, who encouraged him to start traveling
with his band, Radha Krishnal, discovered Sundar. He soon became
a band member. In 1969 he auditioned for a popular ethnic Indian
television program with his song, Nana and Nani. The program, hosted
by Moen Mohammed, gave him a lot of exposure. In 1978, 1979, 1988
and 1989 he won the local East Indian festival singing competition.
